The Power of Your Subconscious Mind

What do you think of this statement: Your belief systems-your habitual ways of thinking and being do not impact your ability to create new results? April Fool’s…They absolutely do!!

I want to speak about the power of our subconscious mind. This is where our habitual and unconscious patterns of thinking- our belief systems live. Research has show that we think up to 80,000 thoughts a day, and we are only conscious of only about 10% of what we think. The other 72,000 play like an old record that skips over and over again and run beneath our conscious level of awareness. An iceberg is a great metaphor this. The thinking that we are aware of lies above the water and the largest portion of the iceberg is beneath the surface. And what is stored and happening in our subconscious mind is what impacts our life and the results we are currently experiencing.

So how do these thought patterns get planted in our subconscious mind? When we were little kids, we were just absorbing everything that was going on around us. Did your parents argue about money? Were you told that education is important or isn't important? How were your parents in their relationship? All the people around you, or the things you heard from school, from friends, the impactful events in your life - all of that was absorbed by your subconscious mind and started to create your belief system. It's how we know what foods we like, what language we speak, it plays an important role in many areas of our life, but it also dictates and impacts the results that we experience. If you want to know what your belief system is, or what that paradigm is, just look at your results, because your results never lie.

Did you know that 80% of all lottery winners are broke within three years of their big win? This is because they have not created the new belief system or “mindset” to support that amount of wealth or abundance. At a very unconscious level many people don’t believe they deserve (fill in the blank) love, success or financial prosperity or even happiness. Seeing these belief systems and reframing them takes awareness.

I recently became aware of the thought, “this feels too good to be true.” I thought “wow, where did this come from?” When I got curious. I saw that growing up within family dynamics that included addictions, a lot of promises were made, and more often than not they were broken. It seemed that as soon as I anticipated something good would happen… it didn’t. With this new level of awareness, I saw that over the years and at a very unconscious level, I had created ways to validate that belief. This was an “epiphany” for me. I realized I was living my life based on my father’s paradigm of fear and self-sabotage. Now that I see this, I’ve installed the new thought pattern “when it feels this good, it is true.” We live and are breathed by a Loving Universal Energy and Intelligence. The great spiritual teacher Jesus affirmed, “I have come that you may have life and you may have it abundantly.” He never said anything about settling for a life of mediocrity based on old beliefs.

The following poem demonstrates the power of our subconscious mind to hold us back.

“I walk down the street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in. I am lost... I am helpless. It isn't my fault. It takes forever to find a way out. I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I don't see it. I fall in again. I can't believe I am in the same place. But, it isn't my fault. It still takes me a long time to get out. I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it is there. I still fall in. It's a habit. My eyes are open. I know where I am. It is my fault. I get out immediately. I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it. I walk down another street.”- Portia Nelson

Our patterns of thinking can cause us to seemingly fall into the same hole over and over again until we finally become “conscious” of them. This is the rigor of transformation. It’s hard to see the picture when we are in the frame.
