This Little Butterfly is small, but her courage is mighty.

Embarking on a 3,000-mile migration across mountains, storms, and unfamiliar lands, this little monarch learns that true courage doesn’t mean being unafraid — it means listening to the quiet voice within

and taking the next step—

even when your wings are trembling.

“This beautiful book, I CAN Do It Afraid! is a true gem and a lesson not only for the children who will enjoy this story, but for all of us who wonder, ‘do I have what it takes?’ The simple guidance Lynne Harley offers is a recipe for approaching the challenges of our time with courage and grace, both of which are so needed today.”

“This amazing true journey for a butterfly is also a real journey into the depth of our hearts. It is a delightful quest that inspires us to embrace the dreams we also hold. The butterfly’s fears remind us how we can find our heart’s courage and wisdom. This inspiring tale of following our true dreams and trusting our heart’s guidance will delight both the child whose imagination travels with the butterfly and the reader who remembers the courage within their own heart.”
— Rev. David McArthur J.D., Unity Minister & HeartMath Trainer, author of The Intelligent Heart, Your Spiritual Heart, and The Monk’s Choice

"I Can Do It Afraid is a meaningful and empowering children’s story that highlights resilience, courage, and personal growth through the journey of a butterfly migrating over 3000 kms from Canada to Mexico. At the beginning of the story, the butterfly feels overwhelmed by the long and difficult journey ahead. Along the way, it faces many challenges that seem impossible to overcome. However, with determination and perseverance, and support from others, the butterfly continues forward and ultimately succeeds in reaching its destination and reuniting with fellow butterflies. This journey reflects the important message that although life can feel frightening or difficult at times, working through challenges and refusing to give up can build confidence, strength, and self-mastery.

The themes explored in I Can Do It Afraid are especially relevant in today’s world, where children are often exposed to messages that emphasize fear, uncertainty, and negativity. This is particularly important for communities that continue to experience the lasting impacts of colonialism and historical trauma. I Can Do It Afraid embodies the teaching of Mino pimatisiwin, or “the good life,” by encouraging children to look within themselves for strength and courage. The story demonstrates that overcoming fears notonly supports individual growth, but also strengthens community, and the importance of helping each other when we are down.

I Can Do It Afraid is a valuable addition to a School Counsellor’s library. Reflective questions help guide a conversation with children to understand and explore ways to overcome fears. The butterfly’s experience provides a gentle and relatable way for

children to reflect on their own struggles and explore healthy coping skills. In a time when social media and outside influences often focus on the negative aspects of society, this story offers hope, encouragement, and an important reminder that children

are capable of facing challenges with bravery and confidence.
